Eco Friendly
Honesty is the Best Policy
Larica Treats believes that it is crucial to be transparent with our customers not only with our ingredients but also with our packaging and equipment.
In 2018, when we first imagined Larica Treats as a brand and an online bakery the two most important ideas were quality ingredients and eco-friendly packaging, equipment, and ingredients. From the beginning, we wanted to stay away from, as much as possible, single-use plastic even though it is a staple of most small businesses, especially in packaging and branding.
Branding
We have recently found a new provider in the US for our cake and cupcake boxes. Our new window boxes are biodegradable, compostable, recyclable, plant-based, made with renewable recourses, and made in the USA.
The bags our cookies and hot chocolate spoons come in are plastic, however, they are recyclable, unlike most cellophane bags.
We started with recycled paper for our business cards but then moved into a small image-heavy flyer to replace them. Our new business cards are made out of recycled paper and we will rely on a QR code for information and images.
Our stickers, unfortunately, used to be single-use plastic however thankfully we have now mostly transitioned to NoIssue stickers. NoIssue makes non-plastic, soy-based stickers on acid-free paper. Once we use up all of our plastic stickers we will then be 100 percent plant-based with all of our stickers.
Raw Materials
Unfortunately, a lot of our raw materials do come already packaged in single-use plastic bags. Whenever possible we choose to buy ingredients in reusable/hard plastic containers so we can then use them to store frostings, cake batters, sauces, ice creams, doughs, and curds.
We currently, reuse our egg cartons for large orders of the Minicakes, so they don’t wabble.
Equipment
Paper towels are completely unnecessary and at Larica Treats we refuse to use them, from day one. We use cotton and bamboo towels to clean our surfaces along with sponges.
Our cutting boards are made out of bamboo and are more resilient to wear and breakage. When necessary we do use single-use plastic pastry bags, but we mostly reuse and wash them.
Plastic wrap is a necessary evil in any kitchen and especially a bakery. We use plastic wrap to wrap all of our cakes to preserve freshness and it allows us to prepare ahead of time. We also use it to cover our curds, ice creams, frosting, and raw ingredients.
We strive to look for new ways to reduce waste and plastic as we are constantly looking for new ingredients, packaging, and equipment. Our hope is to eventually, no longer use plastic at least with our raw materials, packaging, and branding.
